Erica Gibson - She/Her

There is something truly magical about wandering the forest. Every step reveals hidden treasures from the lush moss to the creatures who inhabit it. At each turn, we are reminded of the vastness and interconnectedness of the natural world.
I’ve had the great honor of participating in the Terra Incognita Land Art Exhibition this summer. My goal for the project was to bring a sense of awe and wonder to the visitors who pass through this lush forest. To be reminded that magic exists in hidden places if you’re curious and open to receiving it.
Throughout the property, I created faces on the trees and even sculpted some miniatures in mud from the nearby creek. By giving these trees a humanlike presence, I hope to encourage a closer relationship between us and our cherished woodlands.
Utmost reverence was given to these magnificent tree beings. I used natural earth powdered pigments, water, and few chalk pastels. No chemicals or plastics were used. I hugged each one and quietly asked for their permission prior to painting. Some communicated back with a soft approval and one seemed to whisper little jokes in my ear and said, “Just have fun and play!”

Erica Gibson is Portland, Or based mixed media artist who creates sculptures from found objects. Thoughtful and introspective, real and imagined, the expressions of the characters she creates aim to invite the viewer to reflect on their own inner world. Erica has exhibited her artwork in galleries, art fairs and alternative spaces throughout the Pacific Northwest. She is currently represented by RiverSea Gallery in Astoria, Or.

I’m captivated by old objects and inspired by emotions. I think I’ve always been intrigued by making something inanimate come to life.
