Rose Covert - She/Her

My work at Terra Icognita is about creating an experience of belonging to the natural world. I worked in collaboration with the bowl of cedar trees the sculptural form is wove within, by using the shape of the land and the space between the trees to create a woven sanctuary, a human sized den, a place where we can walk inside and be enchanted by the beauty of the living world. It is meant to be walked in, sat in, explored and enjoyed. My hope was to create a human sized experience of the wilds, with meticulous care I wove this experiential piece to hold us in whichever ways we need.

Rose Covert uses natural materials to weave sculptural forms, using re-imagined basketry techniques, Rose creates woven landscapes that twist and travel around themselves. Her work is evocative of the natural world they are created from. They hold an element of dance and movement in their shapes and pull the viewer in with their dynamic tensions. Rose works entirely with plants that grow within a 60 mile radius of Portland, some of her work is comprised of plants she grows herself, and the rest are from plants she either tends or harvests from on a regular basis.

Rose takes commissions and would love to create a woven den or sculpture on your property.

I find inspiration in the natural world, the exquisiteness of elemental forms and landscapes, as well as the habitats the plants grow in. My work is a continuation of the beauty of the natural world; it allows us to bring the allure of nature into our homes. My process begins with planting and harvesting the plants my sculptures are made from and ends in exploration and design as I weave the forms. Outdoor dens are a new exploration for me and I am very excited to see where they take me.
